Picking the Work

So as most of you know we just got this final project and I am pretty excited about it, but this was not my initial feeling. When Kreinbring told us that we got to choose our book I was really excited, but was bummed to find out that Katie already picked Revolutionary Road….(no hard feelings though). I heard about the movie and so thought it would have been really cool to read the book before seeing the movie…for once. Seeing as Katie did pick the book before me I did not want to do the same thing as her and so started wondering about the other Kate Winslet movie, The Reader.

Here is the video fo its trailer: (not for children)

Trailer for The Reader

I have always liked mystery books and though this book is not really a mystery, the excerpt on the back leads to suspense and the feelings equated with reading a mystery. Furthermore, I have always been intrigued with books about morals, integrity, shame, love, sex, ect. However, this excitement quickly turned into concern because the book was intially written in german and titled “Der Vorleser,” and I was worried if all the good criticism would be in german…..in which case I would need Bill’s help. After checking through google scholar at the OU library, I found that the Kresge Library did have a lot of articles on the criticism of The Reader. I was excited once more.

I decided that I was going to give this book a shot and went to go get it from Borders. They showed me two coppies of the book, one published before the movie and one after. Seeing as I have made a goal to read the book before seeing the movie, I picked the book published before the movie. Looking back on it now, the reasoning does not make much sense. Though they are the same book, the cover on the book that came out before the movie had a more rustic and mysterious look to it and I thought it looked cooler. Judge for yourself…….

After Movie

Anyways, so I was even more exicted to see that it was only two hundred and something pages because I was less intimidated. Everything about this book makes it such a perfect match for me. I am really trilled about this book and about watching the movie………………..oh yea, and doing the project.
